I've found myself studying the details of leaves and whatnot that get trapped in an icy puddle. I think they're interesting and make for a neat picture.
You asked about how the American Eagle had enough light on him when shooting against a bright sky. Shooting in manual mode, I selected the Partial Metering option which is the best for measuring the subject's brightness when the background is much brighter than the subject. That still left his eye in a bit more shadow than I wanted, so in PS I used the Dodge tool to brighten his eye just a bit. Hope that info helps.
