Many years when we started to visit France we fell upon a Sunday Market in the square of a medium sixpence town. It seemed that the only items for sale were Chrysanthemums. All colours, sub species...the whole 9 yards. Remarkable sight, the like of which weld never seen in the UK. Some time later, I mentioned this to a French friend. Immediately, she told me kindly, yet in no uncertain terms, that on France one should NEVER offer Chrysthanemums as a bouquet, gift etc. They are considered to be flowers for whose who have died...and thus inconsiderate. This shocked me...as they are hugely popular late season blooms in the UK...and not at all connected with those we’ve lost.
I November is this Feast Day of All Saints...and a National Holiday. This year, as in all previous ones, families place wreaths, bouquets etc on the resting places of those they've lost. They are almost exclusively chrysanthemums.
@s4sayer Fascinating. Seems I connect carnations with loss, funerals, etc. I too like the varied colors of mums in the gardens and remember the big headed ones as corsages the girls wore at the football games. It's interesting the differences between cultures. thanks for sharing.
@pyrrhula Thank you Ferry. You're right. I hadn't thought about that. I have friends who make temaris, which come from the Japanese, and so often their designs look like chyrsanthemus. And so do those huge fireworks, but I guess those sprung from the Chinese.

I like the name of these chysanthemums
Do you know the Japanese impression of those flowers ?
