No, that's not a California zip code. My car had an oil change yesterday and I was advised to change the air filter. They would do it for $21.99+ … or I could buy it for $9 at Walmart and put it in myself. Here's the Walmart purchase, Fram's CA10118.

Smart move, At least I think it's possible to change air filters without a degree in automotive geology. The new cars are almost impossible to work on anymore. Till you find your way around all the electronics, you are ready to give up and pay the garage.
@digitalrn My dad and father-in-law were automotive engineers who went to engineering school at a time when the "gearheads" would take an engine apart and put it back together. *Those* days are long gone to be sure.
@jendee3 Thanks, Jen!
As Rick suggests, the under-hood space is jammed with electronics. In their defense, right after an oil change the dreaded Service Engine light went on. So back I went. It was an unrelated issue, but the guy plugged in a diagnostic instrument, got the error code, looked it up and went straight to the hose that had developed a leak. Pretty impressive.
@loriromp I watched the guy put back the old one and the air filter is on top and the cover simply "clips" on.
I like symmetry and patterns and vanishing points but this project is forcing me out of those comfort zones, which is good. I wanted to improve and I'd like to think I am!
