Painted Lady

These butterflies are difficult to capture with their wings down. I had a couple other images of this Painted Lady (“Vanessa cardui”), one of them marginally comical, but since they’re so hard to get with wings down, this has to be the post, even though this image isn’t as good as it might be. (This butterfly has lost the tips of both forewings.)

Confirmed at BAMONA as Vanessa cardui or “Painted Lady”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/930128
