National Museum of the Great Lakes

Toledo, Ohio. Some wonderful exhibits in this recently-opened museum.

The Great Lakes are not only the most important natural resource in the world, they represent thousands of years of history. The lakes have dramatically impacted the social, economic and political history of the North American continent. The National Museum of the Great Lakes tells the incredible story of our Great Lakes through over 300 genuine artifacts, a number of powerful audiovisual displays and 40 hands-on interactive exhibits including the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship.

The goldish propeller on the right is from the steamship S.S. John Sherwin. Weighing 22 tons, “it was cast in Toledo in 1958 by the American Shipbuilding Company when the boat was built. It's on permanent loan from the Interlake Steamship Company.

The bridge in the background is the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway, crossing the Maumee River.

After the museum, we had chili and hot dogs at Tony Packo's, which may be familiar to fans of “M*A*S*H.”
