@granagringa Hi Granagringa - After your advice yesterday I sat down with my camera and checked out what I could actually do with it. It would seem that it will allow me to do limited manual changes. I can change the ISO but not the exposure. Instead it allows me to put in an exposure bias - from -2 through 0 to +2. It then determines the shutter speed - I can't directly change that. So I did a series of these photos and left the ISO the same and changed the exposure bias through the full range. This was at the extreme +2 level. So it seems I will only need to master the two parameters that it allows me to change and then it will automatically set the shutter speed. I think this means that I will still need to do some editing on some of the results - but not too many. Many thanks again for all of your help and suggestions.
@robz i don't know your camera but there still mig..do uou have poryraiht be ways for you to have more control. Do you have portrait, landscape, and sports settings? If so...portrait will have a shallower depth of field and landscape deeper. Sports is high shutter speed. If you have lowlight setting that will be a slower shutter. Also if you can adjust white balance, you can play with that.
@granagringa Hi again - I do appreciate all the time you are taking to help! Thank you so much. My camera does indeed have all of the things you mentioned - so I'll definitely try all of them and check the settings that they produce in a variety of situations. I actually found the white balance setting this morning and I think it does allow me to change the shutter speed if I use it properly. I'm going to cut and paste your info so that I can go back to it when I'm not online!!! You're a great tutor! And aren't shadows great -they give you skinny legs..LOL Thanks again Cheers Rob Z
