Gnat Orchid

These are small, almost transparent, native ground orchids. They have just started flowering in the last few weeks. I included my ring to give you an idea of the size of the flowers. We used to have hundreds of these (and the helmet orchids) appear every winter - until bush turkeys moved into our area. They dig up the tiny bulbs and eat them!

Tiny little things!

They are small! You would think the bulbs would be so small they wouldn't be worth the effort to dig them up. Naughty turkeys!

They're so delicate looking.

@golftragic You are so right - hard to see - I can find them because I know where they've come up over the years - it would be hard otherwise.

@jgpittenger You're right Jane - they are very unassuming - even for one of our natives (not many of them shout out at you!) The turkeys have moved on - for the moment anyway!! Thanks for having a look!
