This set of arches goes round the perimeter of ‘The Point’ a new shopping mall and lead to a central piazza and are part of an extensive new development on the Tigne promontory of Sliema. The new development consisting of luxury apartments and the shopping mall replaces the remains of a large barracks with blocks of residences for British soldiers and their families as well as ancillary buildings such as a N.A.A.F.I. as well as a full size football pitch. A football pitch with artificial turf and a sports complex has now been erected on the roof of the shopping complex. The façade of the residential blocks for British soldiers and their families had covered archways and walkways; while demolition works were in progress, care was taken to remove the archway stones which were marked carefully. These have been used to build the present arches as an embellishment to the project and also as a reminder of of Malta’s connection with the British military
