for the first bathers. Birzebbuga is today a flourishing seaside resort in South-East Malta. The bay has been, for ages, a popular bathing place for Maltese holiday-makers. Sand was gradually washed away by the sea and bathers had to take to the water from the flat rocks or from concrete platforms built on the shoreline.
A few years ago the bay was again filled and extended with sand recovered from the sea during works on the freeport project in the vicinity. Pretty Bay may now be considered as a sandy beach, and many people flock to the comfort of its sand and sheltered water.
The bay lies right in the town centre. Shops and restaurants line the streets on its periphery
