Maltese Nougat Vendor at the Festa of Balluta parish. Part of the Maltese festa tradition, the Maltese people being gourmand (ravenous eaters), is the setting up of stalls near to the centre of the festa - the church. Typical Maltese stalls in days gone by would have included Maltese pastizzi (cheese or pea cakes - very delicious), qaghaq tal-ghasel (honey rings), hobs biz-zejt imhawwra (small Maltese loaf with tomatoes, olive oil, olives, tuna, capers ect. and many more mouth watering food. Always present was the Maltese nougat. Most of these foods have now given way to junk food but the Maltese Nougat stall has persisted and in the same form (with that circular exposition in the middle) till this day. Yesterday I could not resist buying the biggest one available (inset) and full of nuts.
Nice shot! It is truly sad that traditional stalls have given way to hotdogs and burgers! I love nougat, but @chamal is right...go slow on the portions hehehe
@jpgiorgio@ivb No commission Ian but the nougat tastes lovely. Have already eaten half of it. Wanted to give you some yesterday but you refused. When you come here JP I will give you, if there is still any left hehehehehe
