MELK MONASTERY, AUSTRIA (2) - TREASURES

At the Monastery there is a section showing the treasures of the Abbey. There are all sorts of chalices, crucifixes, candelabra and other altar ornaments all made of gold as well as chasubiles and other vestments all of the best weave. From the many pictures I took I chose this one for its uniqueness. This is a set of cruets for the serving of wine and water during holy mass made of gold and encrusted with gems. The lid knobs are in the form of V and A – V is for vinum (Latin for wine) and A is for aqua (Latin for water). This monastery must have had the patronage of the Imperial family and/or the richest families in Austria.
This is stunning! I love it- great capture!
