It is said that Acireale is undisputed "queen" of the Sicilian carnival . It’s carnival has a long tradition that dates back to the 1500s and has always been considered the most beautiful in Sicily. It sounds weird that a small town could offer hospitality to the most beautiful Carnival in Sicily and most important in Italy.
The heart of the carnival in Acireale is the parade of the allegorical floats designed and created by ten local artisan yards, which masterfully handcraft the papier-mâché (or real flowers) creating an unmistakable satire - masks used and seen on the floats appear as caricatures of famous people.
The main figure in this carnival float – with the horns and tentacles – is a caricature of Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s Prime Minister until a few months ago.
To answer your comment, Beth, we too have a very colourful carnival in Malta, even though I rarely care to go and watch the parade – probably it also dates to the 1500s. What I noticed in the Acireale Carnival is that they do not seem to have dance groups in costumes which we have abundantly in Malta.
NEWS: great success for the US national football (soccer) team. Yesterday I watched them beat the Italian national side for the first time in their history – and on Italian soil. Result was Italy- 0 USA – 1.
Thank you so very much for looking and for your beautiful comments on yesterday’s picture.
