It takes 10 bearers to carry this statue of Christ the Redeemer. They have to be very hardy because they have to carry the statue round the main streets of Senglea two of them with steep climbs. Watching them lumbering up these climbs, even if you are an unbeliever, makes you ant to pray that they manage to make it to the top. Naturally, the procession stops every now and then to give the bearers chance to pick up their breath. I have read that this pilgrimage, or procession has been organised since 1813 when, during a Plague, the church authorities of Senglea vowed to organise at least three separate annual processions around the city if its population was spared from the deadly disease.
