I took this shot when the sun was up and the blinds still half down. I am not an art connoisseur but to me this shot is a good example of what Chiaroscuro means in art - strong contrasts between light and dark. Chiaroscuro (from the Italian bright/dark) paintings usually have bold contrasts of light and dark which affect the whole composition of the painting. Mary Rose was on that brown deckchair at dawn when I took the picture I posted yesterday.
Chiaroscuro originated during the Renaissance as drawing on coloured paper. The world famous artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio who was from the village of Caravaggio and who was given the name of his hometown like many other artists of his days is the ‘strong man’ of this style of painting. Caravaggio (1573-1610) had a very turbulent life. He became a Knight of the Order of St John and Malta during a brief sojourn in Malta where he left his majestic painting – the only signed by him – of the Beheading of St John which is on show in the Oratory of St. John’s Co-cathedral.
Thank you so very much for looking and for your wonderful comments on yesterday's picture.
@jeffzam That is the valley which divides Xaghra from Nadur and leads to Ramla l-Hamra. There is a stunning view from that balcony. Thanks a lot for your comments on my pictures.
