Posting early today because of an urgent errand I have to do. Will comment on your photos later.
This fort is part and parcel with the history of my Island. It was the fort from where the Order of the Knights of St John defended and directed other defences during the Turkish invasion of 1565, Malta coming out victorious against the much larger force of the attackers. Because of this, Birgu – the town behind the fort – was renamed Citta’ Vittoriosa. Fort St Angelo suffered severe bombardments because of its proximity to the naval dockyards during WWII. After the war it was the British naval headquarters for the whole of the Mediterranean and later also of NATO forces. It now stands proud in the middle of the Grand Harbour, an attraction to visiting cruise liners and their passengters.
There is talk that there was a fort in this place since prehistoric times. The Knights of St John, being a maritime order, chose it for their headquarters when they took over Malta and remained here until they built the city of Valletta. On the left of the fort is Kalkara Creek while on the right is Dockyard Creek.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
