I personally counted the steps that led to this wonderful church, dedicated to San Giorgio in Modica – and that was a total of two hundred steps from the level of the nearest street the coach could drop us. After going up steps all day this was the cherry on the cake. And yet, the majority of us over 60, we all took the climb mostly to see a Filippo Paladini painting of which I took some pictures though most of them were crap. Filippo Paladini has connections with Malta and there are several of his painting adorning churches and palazzi in Malta.
The church itself which is a monumental example of the Sicilian Baroque style has its origins to very early Medieval times. Like many other buildings it suffered the earthquakes that occurred in 1613 and 1693. The principal reconstruction was between 1698 and 1762.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
It's interesting to think the reconstruction was done in the very latest style! Well done on counting the steps.... are you sure about that figure or might you need a recount?
Bravo for you to have climbed all those steps after a day of climbing steps! It sounds as steep and hilly as the day I spent on Rhodes. It seemed that every time we turned a corner there were more steps to climb. This is a great shot to give you the perspective of all that climbing.
A beautiful pic of this wonderful church and a great explanation to it
