The harbour is surrounded by several fortifications and until approx. 4 decades ago was the main port of Malta. Today cargo ships moor at Marsaxlokk Harbour where there is an important container Freeport which services Malta and many parts of Southern Europe. Grand Harbour now services mainly tourism and cruise liners.
