I am back from a lovely vacation. I have taken lots and lots of photos which will take some to sort out. I will be posting a few of them in the coming days.
In the meantime I am posting some fillers.
This is a shot from L-Isla towards the tip of the Grand Harbour.
You can see part of the breakwater which is connected to the mainland by that iron bridge. If you look closely you will see that the bridge is a single span and does not rest on the supporting pylons. The bridge has been placed there only lately. There was another bridge there, in two arches which rested on the pylons. That was destroyed by Italian U-boats during a raid on the harbour in WWII.
Right close to it is the Bell Monument, called so for the huge bell inside the columned niche. The bell is rung everyday at mid-day. As part of the monument is a catafalque with a dead body ready to be slided down to the bottom of the sea (as used to be when a sailor dies on board ship). This is in memory of those who died fighting during WWII.
What an amazing scene. And your commentary really helped me understand its significance. Thanks, too, for viewing several of my photos today and leaving such lovely comments! I appreciated it so much! Cheated a bit to look at them during the day -- I'm trying to keep focused on work, but on my breaks, I reward myself with a little 365 time.
