I was walking along the Valletta walls looking out for some interesting shots when I reached this steep staircase leading down to the rocks just below the walls. I decided to go down and walk to the bridge which links one arm of the breakwater to the mainland. I had never been down from this side and thought of taking some shots of the bridge from a different angle. When I saw the bridge appearing between an opening in the rocky face I started taking some shots. This is one for the week's theme.
The bridge has only been laid a couple of years ago. Previously the link between the land and the breakwater was through a similar bridge which was destroyed in WWII by enemy torpedo boats in an unsuccessful attack on the Grand Harbour. The original bridge was in two spans resting on the pillars in the middle. The new bridge is in one span and does not rest on the pillars which have been left there for posterity.
Thank you very much for looking, for your wonderful comments and fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
You can tell it's been a long winter here as the first thing I thought when seeing this shot was, "Wow- look at those huge snow piles!" LOL They're rocks Ann, not snow!
