Shot taken when I was with Ian and his photography friends at Birgu.
The Silversea (or Silver Spirit), it had both names written: one on the hull and the other on the chimney, is berthed at the Valletta Waterfront guarded by Fort St Michael at the tip of Senglea.
Nothing much remains of this mighty fort – one of several built around Grand Harbour. Together with the adjoining city, Senglea (named after Grand Master La Sengle), it was continuously pounded by cannonballs from all sides and assailed by a large Turkish invading force during the time of the Knights of St John in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. After the siege Senglea was renamed Citta’ Invicta – or The Unconquered City and the walls repaired. During WWII the whole area was almost completely razed to the ground by heavy bombing by Axis forces, being very close to the British naval dockyard. It wasn’t felt proper to rebuild it as it was but what remained was preserved for prosperity
I watched Holland vs Chile and Brazil vs Cameroon yesterday.
In the first match Holland won 2-0. A good match but with few scoring chances. The header that gave Holland the first goal was superb.
Brazil vs Cameroon was an open game with a wonderful display of football and skills. Brazil were the best – obviously, they had Neimar in the squad – what a player!
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments and the fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
I agree about the header Dione. Most matches this World Cup have been exciting but others enlivened by touches of genius. I love the photograph, especially all the lights and their effect on the water and trees. Fav
A lovely scene with that big rock peninsular or is it a Fort ? The St Michael one? Its lovely at this time of night when you can still see well but the lights have come on!
