Tuscany – Day 6.
Imagine you are living in the 15th century wearing your medieval clothing walking around in this lovely medieval piazza and a knight in armour riding his stallion comes over asking for your hand.
Can you imagine that in this lovely setting? It is an old piazza like the one I posted yesterday but what a different atmosphere here! It looks like the time stopped hundreds of years ago. This is the main piazza of Pienza, our last stop for the day.
Pienza was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It was the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, a Renaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Piccolomini is the uncle of Pope Pius III who set up the Piccolomini Library in Siena to commemorate his uncle – I have shown some shots of this magnificent frescoed library when I showed shots of Siena.
Thank you so much for looking and for the lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
I don't need to imagine .........I did!!! I am sure I was a peasant girl dressed in a rough hessian dress with long plaits in my hair! :) Fabulous image!
I can imagine it as I `ve grown up in it. BUT. The other side of the coin is : you live in a house outdated with less comfort, always at work to restore is, and no permission to chance the much on building. Remember it as cold and damp in winter.
Love the view and buildings to watch.
