Until the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530, Mdina was the capital city of Malta. It is a walled medieval city that can trace its history back for more than 4000 years. According to tradition it was here that in 60 A.D. the Apostle St. Paul is said to have lived after being shipwrecked on the Islands. Mdina is also known as Città Vecchia (the old city) and/or Città Notabile (the noble city) .
Today it is referred to as ‘The Silent City’ as no traffic, with a few exceptions, is allowed within its walls.
It is fun to walk around its narrow streets with the beautiful, well-kept and still inhabited buildings. This is one of the shots I took as my brother and I strolled around the city after visiting the antique watch exhibition.
Thank you very much for looking and for the lovely comments and the fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
I cannot imagine wandering through such historical 'streets.' Good detail with the bricks in path and wall construction. Has any had to be reinforced over time? Would love a silent city in my area.
I love the feel in this image and so well keep for its age.
