Carnival is especially for children. While strolling around the carnival floats we saw many children dressed in carnival costumes and this includes, Max who is in the left-hand picture dressed as a Carabiniere (the Italian police). Their parents were all over the place taking their pictures – and I sneaked some of them as well.
The circular stone slabs the children are on in 3 of these shots are silo covers. This big square in Floriana is full of underground silos (or pits) dug in the rock to store grain. There are similar silos in other parts of Floriana and in Valletta. The first granaries were built by the Knights to provide for storage within the fortifications in case of a siege. As the system of storage was reliable and efficient, the British authorities copied in all details the Knights' granaries. The Granaries proved their worth as they continued to provide grain for the starving population during World War 2.
Thank you very much for looking and for all the wonderful comments and the fav's on yesterday's picture. Very much appreciated.
Beautiful photos I'm sure the kids had a great day. Max looks the part in his Italian police outfit but he does have the wrong dog a German Shepherd would do the job better LOL
