This is a group of bersaglieri who came from Trapani to give a performance at this year’s Malta Military Tattoo. Their marching is so different to what others are used to. They actually run instead of march and many play their wind instrument while doing so.
The Bersaglieri (set up in 1836) were a high-mobility Italian light infantry. In the nineteenth century, they acted as skirmishers or shock troops, moving from place to place by running. An elaborate system of bugle calls allowed their units to be deployed and commanded quickly, singly or in combination. The tradition of running continues today.
