There is a heritage trail around the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. After visiting the temples, Max and went for a short walk along this trail. Security Officers at Mnajdra Temples pointed out to me what to look for.
Looking out to the sea from below Ħaġar Qim Temples is a tombstone in memory of Sir Walter Norris Congreve, VC, KCB, MVO, DL. He was Governor of Malta between 1924-1927. He was an English Army officer in the Second Boer War and the First World War. He received the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. At his request, he was buried at sea in the channel between the coast and Filfla Island. This simple memorial was erected facing the area where his burial took place. I don’t know who ordered this memorial to be set up on this site whether it was his family or the British government.
Out at sea and far below a fishing vessel was passing by and I thought it worth while to bring it into the picture, too.
Many thanks for your views, comments, and Fav’s. They are very much appreciated.
Good shot, and information about the memorial. I just checked out Walter Norris Congreve, what a life he lead. His son also was awarded the VC. He died in action aged 25.
Wow- at first it didn't register to me how far out the boat must have been but then the perspective of your shot set in! I like how the tombstone seems to be watching over Congreve's watery grave.
