Cristo Velato – Veiled Christ - at the San Severo Chapel plus two more pictures.
The picture of Cristo Velato is not my capture. It is a scan I did with my new printer of a postcard I bought on my way out of the chapel. This is one of the most, if not the most, impressive sculptures I have ever seen. It is a marble sculpture made in 1753 by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a well-known Neapolitan artist.
The two pictures on the left were taken by me. Top picture I took as I entered the chapel (I didn’t know that taking photos was prohibited in the chapel) and was stopped immediately. Throughout my stay in the chapel I had eyes following my movement by security people to ensure I did not take any more shots. The bottom one was a quick by the hip capture as we left the chapel. It shows how the effigy of Christ was continuously surrounded by visitors.
In fact, I have enjoyed the postcard more than the statue itself because there was a crowd in the chapel all the time with new groups coming in every few minutes. Although the management took every measure to ensure that visitors were free of Covid19, I was not prepared to stand in a crowd for more than necessary.
Grateful for all your views, comments and fav's.
The detail on that sculpture is amazing! So beautiful!
We took surreptitious shots of the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. I can understand them not wanting flash photography, but I can’t see the harm in none flash! Several groups from a nation well acquainted with cameras were ignoring the instructions anyway!
