On several nights we have had two or three of these flying repeatedly at windows, trying to get in. We think they are hornets - similar to a wasp but 2 - 3 cm long, with a loud and menacing buzz. It is unusual to see them in this part of the UK. This one nearly caused me a serious injury. When it suddenly disappeared below the camera screen, but I could still hear the buzzing, I was taking no chances. I jumped backwards out of the danger zone, colliding with a bird table and getting perilously close to steps leading down to the garden.
