During the last very wet winter, followed by a cold, windy and very dry spring, several of fields of winter rape, planted last autumn, failed to thrive, and were ploughed up to be replaced by maize, or sweet corn, used for animal feed (as is most rape seed). Presumably the maize has a later growing season. It was sowed in April I think, and has yet to be harvested, at a time when the fields around, that either produced a successful harvest of rape, or of cereals, have now been harvested, ploughed and sown with winter cereal which will be next year’s harvest.
