Baby Porcupine  by skipt07

Baby Porcupine

We went to a place called Wagon Trails Animal Park in Vienna, OH., which offers a great up close and personal interaction with over 350 free roaming animals. We had the unexpected opportunity to see this mother porcupine feeding one of her two babies. Definitely best when viewed large if you so choose.
A most interesting animal! But I don't think I would want to interact very closely with this mom! Great close up!

It isn't very often you see a pic of a porcupine, let along one feeding a baby! This is so interesting Skip, quite a remarkable animal.

@calm - The porcupines were in a cage. The larger animals; water buffalo, elk, zebras, pot belly pigs, bison, and ostriches to name a few roam free. You are driven around in soecially fitted trucks and are given a small bucket of food to feed the animals who come to the truck.

@kerristephens -Thank you Kerri!

@jetpics -Thank you very much Janette!

@paulaw - The porcupines are as big as a medium sized dog and the babies were as big as a pup. At first the babies were back inside an enclosure so we didn't see them. They are small enough that a lot of people never realized they were even there.

wow!!! This is an amazing shot!!! We have a wild porcupine living in our garden. I haven't seen him as yet, as he only comes out some nights... and only when it's very dark!!! But I have some of his quills!!!

I love seeing mother baby animal shots... always so heart warming! :)

@monkeykid - Thank you for the "wow" Therese! I was so excited when I realized there were babies in their little den. I am glad I was able to warm your heart!

Very cool. I don't think I've ever seen one in person.

So cool Skip! I have never seen such a small porker....and even as babes they have quills on their back ends! Thank you for a shot of something I don't expect to ever see in the wild! Glad your grand-daughter was with you...I bet she loved it.

@danette - Thank you Danette! This was a first for me too!

@lynnb - Thank you Lynn! I was about to walk away when the first baby emerged from the den. Otherwise I might have missed it myself. She did seem to enjoy feeding the animals. This was our third trip there, her first. She is already talking about going back.

@calm - I just realized that I wrote the non-word "soecially" in my reply to you. I have no idea where that came from. I can't even blame it on auto-spelling! What I meant to say was that they were specially retrofitted trucks.

What a great capture. It must be fun seeing all the interesting animals there. Sounds like a place my husband and I will have to try to visit sometime.
