In the middle of a deep freeze, we lost the Internet, cable, and phone service. Thankfully our power and heat stayed on! But the poor birds spend all daylight hours eating to keep warm through the night.
As long as there is a lot of seed in the feeder, the birds tolerate one another more. as soon as it starts getting low they start pecking at one another.
@gardencat - Yes it is. The thing about them is that they are diggers. I have a metal basket below this one that I also put seeds in. The White-crowned Sparrows gets in it and keep kicking their feet and the seed flies all over the place. But, I guess that helps the ground feeders.

We only get them passing through our area in the spring and fall.
