My get-pushed challenge this week, courtesy of Laura, was to capture an architecture image. That's a good call as I shy away from such shots for some reason - possibly because structures are what I had to worry about during the working days. I trudged on down to the Mission San Juan Capistrano (the swallows are currently away) and took several photos, but I always seem to gravitate toward this particular perspective of one of the long corridors. I was lucky to get this view with no people in the shot. The mission is a popular tourist stop, but with rain being threatened, the crowds were thin, and I was able to get the lonely look and then got a surprise splash of sun peeking through the clouds right in time for my photo. It all just came together somehow.
May I suggest a look in black?
What I learned in taking this photo: A very good time for photos at the mission is when rain is imminent.
To All who read this: YES! THIS works fabulously on black with the sunbeams pouring in! Awesome, Ron! This is a gorgeous image of a favorite place! Might you agree that we don't have the most fascinating architecture out here, and to get anything really interesting, reverting to "the old" gets the flavor of the region (as I like to believe it to be, anyway!) Just lovely! 110%
oh my goodness, i've read so many books about this place and every time i see a flock of any birds or swallows, i always think of capistrano! this is beautiful all around, the colours, the textures, the tone, the perspective, the sunlight! i would click on that darn star a million times if i could. i love it!
@mrsvanpatten@aglennc@stray_shooter Given my "limitations" at present, this might be another wonderful place to meet-up again as we all did at the outset "back when"! I'd love to see everyone in this group together again!
Nothing to worry about Ron, this is truly outstanding. the light is beautifully captured and the perspective too. love the detail in the shadows.. it feels like somewhere i could sit a while, in contemplation..
Ron, on black this has such depth! It's a brilliant image and you should think about doing more of this type!! Instant fav. Love the repetition of the arches and the shadows.
@casablanca Actually a very good question as I was curious as to how many might not know exactly how to view a 365 picture "on black." If you click on the photo one, of course you get anlarged version of it and yo uh can comment and see all of the other comments plus other details. Then if you click on the image again it "enlarges" and is displayed on a black background. It doesn't really enlarge all that much, at least on my laptop, but it does sometimes bring out details and contrasts that otherwise might not be so evident in the normal view. Hope that helps!
@stray_shooter Ah, thank you so much! I followed your instructions and now it makes perfect sense. Much appreciated. I've only been on here since 1st Jan, so I am slowly working out all the shorthand, photography jargon and ways the site works. Maybe your response will also help other baffled people like me! Thanks again.
LOVE THIS PIC! Love the tones, the warmth, the peaceful and inviting feel of it. This place is special to me as it was the highlight of my 5th grade year's field trip. I remember being so bummed when it was time to leave. I'm back there now, thanks to your photo.
@Weezilou Agree completely Louise. When Laura issued me the challenge of taking an architecture shot I knew it had to be the native California architecture - and it had to be ORIGINAL architecture. No better place to capture that than the mission1
@mrsvanpatten You've never been to the mission? Oh, well we have to fix that. I agree that a gathering there would be most appropriate. As good as the mission is, the Los Rios area, across the railroad tracks offers possibly even greater opportunities. And I can point @Weezilou in the direction of the antiques mall. ;-)
@overalvandaan@summerfield Thanks so much, I am truly honored. Had it not been for "getting pushed" I never would have made the attempt to capture this image.
May I ask a novice question? I keep seeing comments all over 365 about "looks good on black" or "good on black too." What does that mean?
