Turret At Sunset by stray_shooter

Turret At Sunset

From Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach, California. I've shot and published this turret previously, but never captured it at sunset. There are only a few weeks when the angle is right and even at that a wide angle lens is needed. I was zoomed out full to 14mm in this case. This is one of the shots taken when I did yesterdays "Double Exposure," but turned to the north just a bit.
gorgeous

I really like how you're able to get such rich colors in the sky and sunset without sacrificing the overall exposure. Nicely done!

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. It's actually hard to NOT get a seagull in the shot in this area. They're a bit annoying sometimes, but it flight they can often make for a nice accent. I have to admit to sometimes waiting for one or more to fly into the shot. As always, I appreciate your quality feedback.

@k1w1 Thanks Christine. The angle is tricky due to the unique layout of the California coastline at this point. It actually forces the view to be almost directly to the south in this area, so rarely does the photographer get to face west, so sunset shots are more challenging than one might imagine. I know, it doesn't seem to make sense.

@kali66 Thanks Kali, and yes, I see what you did there. ;)

@louannwarren Thank you muchly Lou Ann. The turret is actually...well, was...functional. It was designed as a staircase for the homeowner to access the beach from above. I think it's been declared a little too adventurous by those pesky OSHA types. But it does make for a popular location for photographers. A little secret that I'll let you in on - I had to work some PS magic to make some people disappear at the turret. Rare is the chance to shoot it wothout some human presence - especially with a 14 mm lens.

@cjphoto Thanks for that observation, Chris. I knew it would be a challenge, so was taking advantage of the 5-stop bracket feature. I'm sure you have employed similar tactics. There are a whole bunch of shots that didn't make the cut. ;)

@aglennc Thanks Anita. I'm happy that you like it.

@olivetreeann Ha ha, thanks Anne. I'll direct you to my comments to Peter regarding the omnipresent seagulls in the area. Not hard to capture them in the frame, to be honest. Oddly enough I titled a recent shot, invoking Richard Bach's creation, and got a surprising number of quotes offered back to me regarding old Jonathon. Thanks for your feedback.

@stray_shooter - Nice!! Bracketing was a great idea to get just the right look and exposure! Yep, definitely use it all the time! Great job!

@stray_shooter I had never thought about it. You are on the coast so you must face the sunset right? You made me go look at a map and I totally see what you mean :)
