Not What It Appears

At first glance most would believe this scene was captured under the beauty of a moonlit sky. Not so, in fact. It was actually captured in the late afternoon while the sun was still far from setting.

I thought I'd show off some of the fun techniques I learned in my Lightroom class today, which allowed us to turn a daylight shot into a night scene. The photo was actually taken many months ago on one of my class's photo expedition. All of the lights you see were manually inserted, the shading, the color, the moon, all manipulated via the magic of Lightroom (plus a small bit of Photoshop). The rowing crew is real though!

The scene, if interested, features the 100 year old Balboa Pavilion in Newport Beach, California, one of the few landmarks in Southern California, shot from Balboa Island. It was originally constructed to serve as a center to promote real estate and it also served as a bath house in the early part of the 20th century. It later became a popular dance hall and in the big band era famous bands led by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and the Dorsey Brothers were regulars there. Today it serves as a center for fishermen, tourists and shops - and a fun photographic subject!
Wow! Nice composite Ron! Great job of processing.

What an incredible scene! Congratulations on your editing, it’s quite amazing. Jerry’s mother and aunt danced to the big bands at the Santa Monica pier in the 40’s! Had to be a dreamy time (until WWII broke out).

An amazing edit -- I'd never have suspected any manipulations that you listed! I'm amazed you could do all that mostly in LR.

@redy4et @sdutoit @onewing @ludwigsdiana @maggiemae @koalagardens @gilbertwood @dutchothotmailcom @pdulis @gardencat @aikiuser @lkr333 @louannwarren @taffy Wow, thank you all for the many positive comments! I wasn't really expecting that for a doctored photo. Yes, it was a fair bit of work. Each of the lights was either an adjustment brush or a radial filter. I did discover that at a certain point Lightroom does not like having so many adjustments and/or filters. I have a six core processor on my computer, but that was no benefit when it came to the last few edits as Lightroom slowed down considerably. Memories of the old 3 1/4 inch floppy days came to mind!

I seem to have missed this one Ron I have read the narrative and your comments, its a very convincing result of your editing skill, without the explanation I would never know it was an AI image (Altered Reality) well done Fav:)

This deserved a Fave from everyone IMHO! That involved some real work! Beautiful image!!! LOVE this! (A very salable subject at Balboa's Art Walk next May???)

@Weezilou Huh, never thought of that. I don't know much about it, but it seems appropriate!
