meaning (a) walking with heavy steps; (n) an animal that walks heavily
this is kartiko, born june 4, 1990. this statue of this giant orangutan sits just outside the Indo-Malayan pavilion at the toronto zoo. he died on august 5, 1998 when "an unknown family thoughtlessly threw cookies into the orangutan exhibits". he was scuffling with the other orangutan for the cookies when he fell into a moat with stagnant water. orangutans cannot swim and kartiko stayed underneath the water for about ten minutes before a visitor at the zoo, who happens to be a former lifeguard, dove in and hauled him out. the former lifeguard's girlfriend gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation, but because the ape's mouth is too big, she used a rolled zoo program and blew air into his lungs. sadly that effort was for naught as kartiko died shortly thereafter.
that is why i seethe in anger every time i see stupid people who would feed the animals. i am all for saving the wildlife and being kind to animals, but feed them with your regular human food, or worse with your stale mouldy bread? that i think is just pure asinine.
Oh, that is so sad. Horrible! Animals are innocents that we need to protect. :0( Poor Kartiko. That is a "gravigrade" type animal..for sure. I had fun with with this Mad Minute..tagged you on mine to make sure you knew I did Mad Minute!
@summerfield Well, I almost forgot to do it! I was thinking of stuff yesterday, when I met with Tara for a photo walk/shoot and lunch. But then forgot. My memory is terrible. I liked the shots of the "free elephants" i did not buy...they were pretty coolio, but I had to put Ella on the site for today's post! haha
Great to see such a good statue and sorry to hear about the story. I see it all the time and I have no hesitation in walking over to people and pointing out the signs which are always around.
That is really awful, so tragic. Why do people just ignore the signs, they make me so mad. I wonder if that family even know what happened was there fault. Well done for the mad minute word though.
What a sad story. People can be so irresponsible and have no idea of the damage that they can cause when haphazardly feeding wild animals any old thing!
oh how tragic - we have a lot to pay for on a massive scale when if comes to having elbowed nature aside and left no room for these creatures to continue living as they always should - free and out of reach of our poisonous touch
