adam and his two best friends jamie and peter, all twelve years old, went into the woods that fateful summer's day in 1984. they didn't come back. the next day, adam was found clinging to the trunk of an old tree, with scratches on his back and blood in his shoes. but jamie and peter were never found.
twenty years on, adam is now rob ryan, a detective in the Dublin police force. no one knows about his past, even he has no memory of what happened that day. then a little girl's body is found at the site of the old tragedy and rob is drawn back into the mystery. rob's own private enquiries are taking a toll on his mind, and every trail leads inexorably back ... into the woods.
"What I warn you is that I am a detective. Our relationship with the truth is fundamental but cracked, refracting confusingly like fragmented glass. It is the core of our careers, the endgame of every move we make, and we pursue it with strategies painstakingly constructed of lies and concealment and every variation on deception. x x x I crave truth. And I lie."

for the mad hatters' in character theme this week.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
Had to laugh at myself because when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was another self story entry. So I start reading and think, "Wow! I don't think there is any scenario on the face of this earth that Vikki has not been through! Two friends murdered and now the third one is a detective in Dublin..." Then I see it's a Madhatter's entry. Sheesh- you really had me going there!
