"I read the news today, oh boy! about a lucky man who made the grade. And though the news was rather sad xxx I saw the photograph..."
(Lennon, McCartney; from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967)
Wade Belak was the "enforcer" for the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team from 2000 to 2008. He was found dead yesterday; he was 35.
i don't really care much for hockey, but it makes me sad whenever a young person dies, especially when they say it was suicide. what could be so terribly wrong for someone to take his own life?

i've decided to do the songs of the beatles for september, after all. perhaps not the whole month, but whenever it suits my photo or the occasion, and also join in the fun of the september song challenge.
"a day in the life" is my favourite of all the beatles' songs, especially the first part. the melody is catchy and the lyrics are so poignant. and because john lennon wrote the first part of the lyrics. and i was in love with john lennon when i was young.
oh lovely! I love this song, you've got me singing it now...great photo for the song, very sad, you are right.
I want to do some songs, so will just wait for inspiration to hit, which probably wont be daily. And today, there is a serious lack of inspiration, let's see if my pic 'makes the grade'....great shot Ms Summer!!
@danig - thanks, DG. what usually inspires you? cheer up, kiddo. if you're uninspired, put some CD's on the player and sing along. sushi? i have some 'food for the gods' in the fridge, i can send you some, or i can just e-mail you the recipe and you can make it. :-)
@pamfromcalgary - thanks, pam. isn't it ridiculous though? some people are dying and they want to desperately live, and then you have these healthy young ones, with the world at their feet, and they kill themselves. i feel sorry for the families. what ails the world, exactly?
oh I am cheery, just hated all my photos this morning and got dejected, until the hammock called to me and the world was all good again....sushi? oh YUM! I am going away this weekend and intend to eat lots of sushi!! we can't get any down here.
and you ask what ails the world exactly? greed. selfishness and lack of compassion. that's a conversation for later! happy day my friend!
I like the sounds of your theme -- but then, how can you lose with music??! And yes, very sad news......so troubling......and most troubling for those left behind.
So much sadness in the news these days it gets difficult to focus on all the good news,Ahh A Beatle's series cool,My 16 yr. olds fav beatles song is Maxwell's silver hammer..go figure.
@bkbinthecity - thank you. it is a tragic news, especially that i have to hear it constantly with all the commentaries, etc.
@danig - i would like to see those photos and see for myself why you don't like them. in any case, enjoy yourself this weekend. and eat a lot of sushi; i just might have sushi, too.
@cscecil - how can one lose with the sounds of the beatles! i'm getting all those CD's ready. methinks i have all the albums in CD's except for one which escapes me now which one. it was my first project for myself when i moved here, to have all the beatles' album in CD's. thank you, CS. i hope i won't disappolint!.
@steeler - so true, howard. so true. Maxwell Silver Hammer has a catchy melody, typical of all mccartney songs. i could guess why it's your teenager's favourite. thank you, howard.
@jannkc - and i am so looking forward, eagerly, to your post. you can still post belatedly, can't you? rod stewart rocks, especially in the 'oldies' albums! thank you, jann.
such a waste. i feel for the people left behind who have all those unanswered questions and guilt that should not be theirs. so sad. you have done a wonderful photo that matches your pick of a really cool song. i really like it and look forward to seeing what you do with more of the their collection!
@catsmeowb - thank you, camille. amen to what you wrote. but life goes on for us. you remember the beatles, don't you? so, if you do and you like(d) their music, i'll try to please, please you!
This Beatle challenge will be quite an interesting challenge for you! I'm looking forward to seeing your pics.
As an aside to your commentary, suicide is not the result of a choice or decision. It is an illness, just like cancer or heart disease or any other illness. The same as someone's heart or lungs, etc can be unwell, so too can their brain. I"m not for a moment saying you are in any way saying or doing something inappropriate, rather just hijacking your pic comments to take an opportunity to perhaps educate anyone who may drop by your pic and take the time to read the comments. Wade died of an illness, not a decision. Thanks for letting me try to take suicide out of the dark ages.
@sunnygreenwood - thank you, anne. your comments always encourage me to do well with these challenges.
and, thank you for your information. you know, it makes me think i probably am not that well-read after all because this is the first time i've ever read this view on suicide. it is an eye-opener. several years back, i had a good friend who jumped in front of a subway train. she had just finished her 12-steps, had a spanking new place and a loving boyfriend. but one day, she just did what she did. i'm one of the few who cannot get over it and i cry and feel sad every time this topic comes up because i could not understand how a bright, young person can do something like that. but this gives me a better understanding of it. thank you, anne, so much.
great illustration of the song...according to most Beatles biographers, the inspiration for the first two verses was the death of Tara Browne, the 21-year-old heir to the Guinness fortune and close friend of Lennon and McCartney, who crashed his Lotus Elan on 18 December 1966 in Earls Court, London...and then the band adapted the story in the 17 January 1967 edition of The Daily Mail, which reported the coroner's verdict into Browne's death into the song...famous producer George Martin, however, believes that this verse (along with other passages from the song) is a drug reference and that while writing the lyrics, Lennon was imagining a stoned politician who had stopped at a set of traffic lights
@sunnygreenwood - thank you for your comment; my partner committed suicide almost 21 years ago now...and you are absolutely right, when someone takes their own life it is not a decision as such, it happens because the person is being totally overwhelmed by a serious emotional condition and have no control (and no hope)
