page 128, The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett
from line 18, the word today is "readers".
last night, life rattle held its 18th Toronto's Totally Unknown Writers Festival. there were 10 readers - writers whose stories were featured during the year in the radio show which i used to co-host, Life Rattle (the station had too much trouble and in the end they were asked to vacate the university's premises and so our 25 years of running the show ended, too).
the ten writers/readers read each of their stories at the festival. their stories were published in an anthology and were sold to the attendees. as in previous years the books were sold out by the end of the night. as you can see, the writers come from varied backgrounds. at life rattle we give the breaks these writers would not otherwise get from the mainstream media. from their humble beginnings at life rattle, one is a regular columnist at a city-wide daily, some are teachers and some have published their novels. the writers shown who read last night are all emerging writers and their stories ranged from funny to dramatic and one was just for mere shock value.
pardon, folks, i'm a little slow with commenting on your stuff; but i assure you i'm trying to catch up. i'm trying sort out what needs to get into the luggage while doing other stuff. aaarghh! going on a holiday is quite stressful! but i like it!
Love the collage . . and am trying to see in my mind how each of them might write. That has to be an interesting and entertaining festival! Great photos, summerfield. You should have been in one . . no?!! I do hope that you are still writing! Enjoy the holiday.
what a wonderful collage -- and it sounds like a wonderful evening!!! You've done so many neat things in your life (co-hosted Life Rattle, for example) -- ! Love hearing about it all! Go pack -- you can catch up with us later!!!
That's really commendable. There are so many talented people who deserve to be recognized. Glad you were able to bring some of them the attention they deserve. Perfect event to capture the word.
@karenann - i still write a lot, karenann. the first time i read at this festival was in 2000. after my writing mentor, who was one of the two founders, died in 2005, another writer and i sort of took over the radio show, and then included in the collective that also organizes the festival. i've read three times, and i'm still unknown. hehehe. but at this one, i had the pleasure of introducing the last writer and the best story of the night. that's Norm Reynolds, the gentleman in the middle right. his story was so hilarious. if you get to listen to one of the podcasts in the life rattle website, you might find and listen his story there.
@danig - there are talks going on right now as the university wanted the station back in the campus and the station wants to have all the original programs. life rattle was actually one of the first shows when that station was established. why don't we submit one of yours, hey? thank you, DG.
@olivetreeann - thank you, ann. we are starting to get noticed. we all volunteer our time for the festival and the radio show. good for the resume. aside from producing and airing the radio show, i also help out with the editing and it's most of the time fun to read an emerging writer's first and very raw stories.
@danig - you know, DG, when i am on that plane over the pacific ocean next month, i'm going to browse your blog and tell you which of your stories i'd like on the podcast. hey, you could be on the totally unknown writers festival!!!!
