Carnglaze Caverns, near St. Neots in Cornwall, consists of three huge man-made caverns which were formed as part of an underground slate quarry.
The uppermost of the caverns is known as the rum store because it was used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War to store its supply of rum. In 2001 it was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400 and is used regularly for folk and rock concerts. The acoustics are just fabulous.
One of the lower caverns has a large underground lake and is regularly used as wedding venue........ Not sure why you would want to get married in a dark and damp subterranean cavern unless you happen to be called Hades and Persephone....... but some people's notions of a romantic setting are different to others I suppose..
It is also home to a large colony of bats.
These are the steps down from the rum store to the lower caverns. It is a fascinating place set in beautiful woodland and well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.
@kerosene Kitty and I had a very Burtonesque Gothic wedding, but went for a grand Victorian neo-gothic manor house for the service. I don't think Kitty would have liked dragging her black lace and silk wedding dress through the mud and puddles in these caverns. :)
