Another very British sport

Bowls...... When the British sporty outdoor types get a bit too old, slow and arthritic for all that running and jumping about, they tend to settle for the more gentile sport of bowls. The aim of the game is to gently roll big black balls down a field with the aim of getting them as close as possible to a little yellow ball. It is a game of great subtlety and gentle strolling up and down...... combined with extraordinary amounts of standing about muttering with pained and pensive expressions on your face.

We find these chaps at a very tense moment in the 16th end with their balls in a state of total disarray..... the tension is greatly heightened by the fact that George (on the right) has dared to turn up wearing brown shoes rather than the regulation whites. He always was a bit of a rebel was George. People have been issued with a lifetime ban from the bowls club for less...........

Not sure it's a sport I will be embracing in my old age....... unless they let me fire the black balls out of a cannon. That might make things a bit more interesting. :)
Ha this brought back some memories. My ex father in law played bowls for Surrey and his life revolved around the greens. Now when I first knew him I made the cardinal sin of calling them 'balls'. They are not called balls Madam he said, they are called 'woods'! Lesson learnt!! Wonderful capture of the 'which is closer to the Jack?' moment!

@Cherrill I also get into trouble with golfers for calling their equipment golf bats. :)

apparently at a certain age (which I have probably reached) the need to play bowls becomes overwhelming :)

Hahaha that was quite entertaining :) :) I see it's not quite like pétanque then? It totally reminds me of it except in the south of France they have no uniforms but they do have cigarettes hanging from their mouths :)

This is a cool moment in the life of the bowls brigade! I love their expressions. Over here I always worry about the oldies playing in the summer heat and keeling over! I am also amused how much they take care of their 'bowls' - polishing and keeping them in fancy boxes! lol
