St. Austell Viaduct by swillinbillyflynn

St. Austell Viaduct

The original viaduct over the Gover Valley in St. Austell was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 1850's when he drove The Great Western Railway through Cornwall all the way to Penzance. it had granite piers topped with a wooden structure.

Isambard at the time had no idea how popular the line was going to become. and the original viaduct was only single track. You can still see the original piers behind the new twin track viaduct which was constructed in 1898.
