I'm not much of an ornithologist and don't go looking for bird photos. If one happens to wander into my viewfinder and I have nothing better to do, I sometimes press the shutter button just for the hell of it.
However I was wandering about in the Lost Gardens of Heligan the other day and found myself in one of their bird observation huts..... Hides I think they call them. I was peering out the window, when I was accosted by a nice young lady who was squealing with delight and seemed to be on the point of orgasm. She had a camera the size of large house brick and a lens that would have looked more at home at Jodrell Bank Observatory. She had obviously mistaken me for a fellow twitcher and was very keen to tell me there was a water rail on the lake.........
Not wishing to dampen her enthusiasm, I feigned great excitement and took several photos of this small brown and quite ordinary looking bird. (I will admit that it had a very nice red beak) I then thanked her profusely and made my escape.
Throughout the whole episode, my wife Kitty was sitting there and was struggling to supress a fit of the giggles.
So for the benefit of all you twitchers out there...... I present to you the very exciting and orgasmic water rail.
I feel sure one of you will enlighten me as to how and why such a small brown bird can excite young ladies to quite such an extent...... I may find this information very useful at some point.
Ha! Love the story to go with your lovely bird photo! Gave me a giggle! I have never seen a water rail, so am unsure of the source of the excitement. I have a couple blue heron I stalk occasionally, but not with quite so much fervor! :)
