Analog........

Other forms of analog (other than film photography) are available.

I find it quite sad that a lot of young people only ever listen to music in crappy digital MP3 form, played on iPads through tinny squeaky little ear buds.... or through buzzy 1.5" speakers on their laptops or iPad docking stations. They are missing so much. Even CDs are found noticeably lacking when compared to a vinyl copy of the same album.

My feeling is that if you are going to enjoy music properly it needs to be played on good old analog vinyl through a ridiculously powerful amp and some inconveniently large speakers. turned up loud enough to feel the bass vibrating up through your legs from the floor.

The interesting thing about the whole analog vs digital debate is that when I use digital photographic processing software and I find that it is packed full of ways to make your digital photographs look like vintage film shots. I just think "if you want your photographs to look like you used film, why not just use film."

I also have a state of the art digital recording studio and you would be amazed at just how many bits of software are available to make my digitally recorded music sound as if it was recorded on an ancient analog tape machine and played back through a good old analog valve amp.

The problem is that digital may well be far more convenient but we are constantly sacrificing quality for convenience in the digital age.

It always reminds me of what Robert Heinlein once said "There are two types of fool in the world, one who says this is old, it must be good. The other says this is new, it must be better.

I find it very gratifying to see that there is still a lot of enthusiasm for film photography particularly among young people at the moment. Also that many musicians are starting to release their work on vinyl as well as CD in recent years.

You'' get no argument from me there. The other benefit of a powerful amp and larger speakers is that you can't hear the neighbours complaining ;-)

When I hear some of the music I listened to as a kid, my mind adds the pops and ticks that were on my original albums. ( I didn't take care of my records very well...)
