Today the Chicago Digital Photography Meetup Group sponsored a small-group (20 photographers) field trip to the Chicago Violin School. It began with a a wonderful description of how a violin was made and what the students studying there full-time for three years learn to do as they create 7 violins over the course of their education. We broke into a few small groups (it's in a very tiny space) and, led by a student guide, were given a tour. We then had about a half-hour to wander throughout the school and take photos. I chose this one because the violin has begun to take shape. This student is in his second year, and is about half-way through the process of creating the instrument. BTW, there were actually around 24 steps our lecturer went through, but each step seemed to have many many parts to it.
@mej2011@mrsvanpatten@vankrey It was a great day and, Michael, that was one of my reasons for choosing the photo as well -- he captured the intensity I saw among all the students.
Super photograph! The violin and work on it is so neat to see. I also love how the curve of his cheek matches the curve of the violin, with a fairly even gap between the two!
@anwan Thanks Annette. I'm just so glad you encouraged me to just show up. It was a great place in and of itself, but a wonderful opportunity to practice with unusual lighting, to take portraits, closeups, and broad shots. I wish I could go back again.
Wonderful shot! I bet that was a really interesting experience. My 83 year old mother in law is a violinist and plays in an orchestra. She has several violins and spends lots of time practicing. Such a beautiful instrument visually, and of course the sound is incredible.
Great shot. i like your POV. Thanks for the challenge, Im off work a bit this week, so will play tourist and take some shots. I went through your album and I think its awesome. My challenge to you is to take a picture capturing movement. Good luck and have fun!
@lfrans Movement is a great challenge! It's definitely something I want to learn to do -- I have a few ideas, and if weather cooperates, I'll probably try posting a few times. Thanks! Glad your challenge will work for you this week.
I would be in total awe in a place like that! It must have been amazing to take photos there. This shot is truly excellent and makes me feel as if I'm there watching too.
@olivetreeann Thanks Ann! I have so many from the day, it was really hard to choose just one. This was one of my favorites, of course, but there were so many hard working talented students.
The lighting is perfect and the angle is just right so capturing the work being done. Did you know Alyssa's violin was made in Chicago, too? You are having such interesting experiences in photograph, Taffy!!! I never even knew there was a Chicago Digital Photography Meet-Up Group!
@jyokota Thanks Junko! I wonder if Alyssa's violin was made there?? This is what I've learned since I've been mostly unable to get away (feel guilty for leaving four days this week).
Thanks for visiting and the positive comments. Lisa, it really was an amazing experience.
