A well-known Hawaiian tradition is the presentation of a lei to a visitor or special guest. At our meetings, the mainland group was presented with leis by the team from Hawaii at the leadership dinner. I took macro shots of each of them and liked this one for the color against Sarah's dress, and the focus.
Thank you for your comments on my shot in the botanical garden and the one of the ukelele. Instead of individual thanks, I visited your sites and enjoyed looking at your photos and commenting. I'm back home and catching up today.
@danielwsc It's odd, but wearing the lei really does pull you into the culture -- the scent of the flowers is very noticeable (luckily I have no allergies -- that can be an issue for some folks) and all day, wearing it made me feel like I was in the midst of a garden, not a meeting room.
@amandal Thanks, Amanda, it's good to be home even though I enjoyed my time there a lot. Looking forward to sleeping in a bed after the red-eye last night!
@vankrey Michael, I don't know much about flowers so am not sure what this one was made of (or actually, what any of ours were, unfortunately). Each one was unique among the ones they gave us, which made it very special for us. But more generally, there are certain leaves used to honor politicians, for example, and there are some that are non-allergenic (e.g., made of tea leaves), and ones that are woven in certain patterns that indicate high honor. Costs vary tremendously as well, depending on the flowers and the patterns.
@kazlamont@anwan@jankoos Thank you for noting the POV. It just seemed to 'fit' the lei and was handy that Sarah had worn the cream colored simply dress!
@olivetreeann@colie Thanks Ann and Colie! The leis there are so beautiful, but are so fleeting. I really wanted to capture at least one of them for my album.
