One more six word story for Joey's challenge and another shot from Sunday's zoo walk. The lion and lioness at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo share a space, an indoor cage that connects to their outdoor space. On a cold windy day, they looked pretty comfortable together in their indoor space. My lens couldn't accommodate a wide enough angle so I created the collage to try to convey their calm sense of 'togetherness.' They were pretty sweet together, actually.
I appreciate all your comments on my other zoo shots, and the perspective of zoos as sites to protect endangered species. I do think they play a role, and am glad the animals are safe to lead a long and healthy life. But it's hard not to anthropomorphize and assume they miss the wild and might rather be there.

Beautiful double portrait. Incidently, I was please to see the word "anthropomorphize" used this way. Those of us who search for petroglyphs and pictographs use "anthropomorph" to describe human-like figures in rock art.
Such majestic beast, I wish you could see them in the large wide open spaces that we are able to view lion in! Although saying that one is not always guaranteed seeing them as there are many places where they could be lying but just not be visible from the road!
Love the say you put this together......they do look peaceful and content. Wonderful capture of them and they look as though they are next to each other. Well done.
they would not miss the wild as such --------besides an instinct they were born with - as many - probably most - animals in zoos were born in capitivity :)
A gorgeous pair! I also had mixed feelings about animals in zoos - until it was explained to me that most animals in todays zoos were actually born in captivity.
@timandelke That's made a difference to me as well -- several folks have made that point. And I imagine an animal born in captivity would never have been safe in the wild.
cool shots and story - they do exude calm - and Gerald Durrell started working in London zoo, collected animals for zoos and finally started Jersey zoo and a movement to use zoos to conserve. The conservation work from Jersey zoo is amazing - as are his books about it. http://www.durrell.org/Conservation
Gorgeous shots!! Such beautiful animals. It's always a priviledge to see them even in a zoo. I know I will never see them in the wild and I am always blown away when i am able to get to a zoo and get the chance to see and photograph them.
