Many of you commented on the color version of this shot that it looked like an Escher painting. I was curious to see if I could bring that out further by processing in b&w. I waited til bww (black & white Wednesday) to do it. It was great fun-- so, many thanks for sharing that thought!
PS Someone else thought it fit madhatters, looking like the Hogwarts stairway. I loved that idea too!
It does look a bit like Hogwarts in B & W! I liked this shot better in color
because of all the fine detail but you've done a great job on this version.
It's amazing how you re work the same photo for a different and equally effective image. You're processing talents are astounding Taffy!
I enjoyed your colour version but it works much better in monochrome as now the maze created by the angles of the stairs is more pronounced and there are no colour distractions.
Oh yes, fits perfectly for both themes and I must say that I prefer this b/w edit, it´s somehow more calm and it does not mess with my perception as much as the coloured one did, so now I can appreacite all the different layers better
Very good processing, but, even though I have become much of a B&W fan (under the influence of Mara @mara19500!), I feel that the colour version gives better definition and distinction to the different and somewhat confusing layers.
I'm in the minority, I like it better in color. Maybe because it's a place I've been. Your Chicago shots give me a huge smile, just like Michael Elliott's New York pictures!
@ericdibosco It's been so interesting to see the different preferences. As an image/photo, I like the color, but as an artistic image or something that feels more unusual, to me the b&w is the better one. I do admit, this has been one of my favorite shots ever -- this and the Rookery spiral staircase are ones I'm pretty happy with.
Yes, that is really cool, and the distortion from the wide-angle almost adds to the amazing-ness. Love the patterns and contrasts. I'm curious though about the grey patches in the windows top-right - is that a processing thing? Or is that just how they looked?
@aliha I think the patches are variations in the reflections of the buildings across the street. The processing may have brought them out more, but I'm not sure as I don't remember exactly how it looked that day.
Hey Taffy! I saw this on the Madhatters Harry Potter post. I had already seen this and loved it. Did you take it to be the staircases in Harry Potter on purpose? Or did you guys just realize later that they could be those stairs? just curious
@espyetta When I was taking it, I was mostly thinking Escher. I'd thought of Harry Potter, but didn't think I captured the idea of staircases that moved, so didn't tag it at first. Then, @redy4et Elizabeth mentioned it in her comment, so I decided to post -- and then the madhatters group apparently agreed! So it was fun, but it wasn't my goal when I first set out to take it and make it b&w.
Well, I thought I had liked the color version better, but when I went back and looked at it again, I realized how much more powerful it was in B&W....yes, you definitely brought out Escher in this one! Great shot again, and wonderful processing!
