At Barney's Lake to do a long exposure shot, I couldn't help shifting to my macro with several butterflies flitting about. Then, I started noticing all the dragon/damsel flies (did you ever notice that damselfies in one word makes selfies?). Anyway, I ended up with this shot of a red one -- not something I've seen very often. It barely stayed in one place long enough to be photographed so I was quite happy with the clarity here.
Sue Hecker identified it as a Calico Pennant damselfly. Thanks Sue!
A great shot. Would have liked to have seen it cropped a little more or a greater dof so the damselfly stood out more and we could have seen the lovely details you have captured. Well done.
Love your SOH!! And also love this shot Taffy, it's so clear I can almost touch the fly. I don't have a macro but really enjoy looking at others macro shots.
Wow, I've never seen one like this before so I looked it up. It appears to be a Calico Pennant damselfly. I saw where they are identified by the red hearts on their body.
Beautiful, absolutely gorgeous capture of a very elusive subject!! I have been loving your shots of the dragonflies! BTW, what happened to the mosquitoes?
I agree lovely clarity, I never seem to be able to get close enough to capture any bugs and by the time the camera is on the tripod they have flitted away.
@stimuloog Thanks Marloes...it was about 2 inches long. And the wingspread was about 2" across. I was about 8 feet or more away so ended up cropping it quite a bit.
@panthora Thanks Osia -- I'm having fun trying to capture the dragonflies. But the mosquitoes are still, incredibly, daunting. I went out to photograph a daisy field today and even with a net over my head and neck, I still got bitten. There are fewer in mid-day and during windy days there's some relief, but I must have about 20 bites on my neck and arms and that's being really careful!
I sympathise about the mozzies, they were really bad at Kakadu and of course we have Dengue Fever going around here at the moment. Hopefully you don't have that to deal with.
Beautiful dragonfly you've captured, I love the detail in his wings.
Dragonflies and Damselflies can be so frustrating to capture so it's so great when you finally get a good shot, and you managed to do just that. Death to all mozzies!
