It started as a 'go to the roof and photograph the moon' plan. Moon stayed behind clouds while other parts of sky were clear. Very frustrating.
Change plans to: nifty fifty from the roof, sooc. But had to bracket, 'just in case,' and then when it came time to download and post, I had to apply HDR, 'just to see.' Decided to post this to convey "the building that blocks our view" -- the university's administrative office building fittingly ruins the view for all the rest of us in the neighborhood, adding nothing and blocking our view of some lovely downtown skyscrapers. Sears Tower and Wedding Ring building can be seen in the distance.
I was, likewise, thwarted from taking photos of the moon this evening. The only time it peeked from behind the clouds, I was driving home and, then, only for moments. I skipped a night-time shot all together. I like the processing on this. Quintessential Chicago!
@nanalisarocks Well, I did take it with my nf, but then I processed the result in Photomatix so not time to hang it up yet!! Thanks for the visit and comment that made me smile!
When I see pictures like this I envy people who live in cities and have the opportunity to take this kind of shot. I have not tried any nightscape shots as we don't really have anything worth shooting at night!
@salza Us neither, Grahamstown isn't exactly the light city of Africa!
I'm always in awe of these night shots. But I can see your frustration - that building is in the way and is very architecturally different to all the others. Great shot though!
Beautiful nightscape! I had the opposite problem, the moon was in full view but was so bright that all my shots were blown out. And I had to stand in the middle of the street. The cars kept coming by with their headlights. I finally gave up and posted a different moon shot from last night.
really amazing shot and amusing story - fantastic view, shame about that building. And yes, I tried for the moon last night, but it was far too misty to get anything so
Great story Taffy! I love that you have taken this with your nifty fifty! It just shows what you can do with that lens! Wonderful night shot. Such a shame about that building spoiling your view! Mind you I would love this view and the opportunity to take this kind of shot!
Great nighttime shot! Who needs a moon with all those city lights, and all those colorful spires pointing to the sky! Yes, hate ugly buildings like that, especially when they block your view. We have a tall apartment building similar to that close to the beach, and I think they passed an height ordinance after that due to public outcry!
Don't you think Richard is going crazy sometimes just dying to process but he set the challenge so he has to follow. You can just do what is best for the situation. I just laughed silly at your title. BUT the picture is beautiful. What a view to have.
It's a shame that so much money is spent on those huge buildings but not a lot of thought about aesthetics for some of them. It's still a beautiful skyline in spite of the one not-so-pretty building.
You can still kill a shot when the building kills the view! ;) My moon shots were all hand held and silly because I went outside for about 1 whole minute and would not bother with the tripod. So I made a collage. No editing except inside the Picmonkey boxes so they'd look like bouncing balls. Oh, the things we do! I love this shot!
Typical bloomin' pen-pushers and bean-counters. Love the shot Taffy, the processing is superb and there's so much to see - despite the vertical ice-cube tray in the foreground.
@kathiecb Thanks for the visit and kind comment. Appreciate your sorrow at our otherwise beautiful view. But we did know it was there so can't complain. It's just that we also know the really gorgeous scene behind it and it looks so huge compared to the skyline (it's only a few blocks away, compared to a mile for the city skyline).
Chicago is a great city. I like to see all perspectives of the skyline, but I can understand your feeling about the blocking building. Down in front! Right? I took my tripod out tonight to try to capture the moon too and got only a few shots when the clouds separated a bit. I ended up using my best moon shot tonight for my second album, not my main album.
Beautiful night scene and love the story. Where I love there are no skyscrapers, just trees blocking the views of the ocean and occasionally after storms, strangely enough some of the trees disappear.
Now that you mention it, that admit building is rather in the way. Your night photography pics are a delight to view. You have an amazing view of Sears Tower. (or Willis Tower if you're calling it by its new title now)
What an amazing night shot, Taffy. I love it. FAV You mentioned the moon and I have a clear shot from outside our door but just a white ball in the sky turns out. So very frustrating.
Still a fantastic shot and a fave.

Love your night shots of the city at night!
Well done..
