Why was I waiting there and not walking back?
1. Agreed to go for a walk in a flat area with my friend and her dog and the dog they are dog-sitting.
2. Walked carefully as my knee was still quite sore.
3. Took photos of dogs using 85mm lens, then switched to wide-angle lens.
4. Decided to switch back to focus on dogs.
5. As I was changing lenses, dropped the 85mm and watched in horror as it rolled toward the swamp (otherwise, was safely wrapped).
6. Reached quickly to get said lens before it got to the water of the swamp.
7. Heard strange popping noise and felt searing pain in knee.
8. Not able to bend knee without serious pain.
9. Hobbled out of swamp area with friend.
10. Got to road and this fence where I sat and waited for her to come back with my car to drive home.
11. Forgot about clutch which I couldn't operate.
12. Got ride to house in her car while her husband brought our car back.
13. Realize island is not best place to be with a new injury...not returning to Chicago til Tuesday.
14. Ouch...feeling sorry for myself! But much time will be available over the next 24 hours to sit, grade students' papers, and process photos so I may get caught up on my album.
I sure hope you are feeling better! Glad a ride was coming and that your lens did not go in the water. I am a PT so take good care of that knee! I do love this lovely fall capture! Hope your knee is feeling better too!
Taffy, what a major bummer to get injured, but for a good cause (saving the 85mm lens!). I hope your knee heals quickly. Take care! As to your photo, it has a tilt-shift feel to it, which I really like. Fav!
Holy cow! So sorry you hurt your knee… This sounds like a very distressing adventure. Glad the lens is safe. Hope you make the most of your couch time. Lovely shot, by the way.
How did you hurt your knee? It must have been an injury - you are not old enough to have arthritis! Looks a nice place to wait and you camera does not have a knee injury!
Oh no! I hope it is nothing serious. On a happy note, it's a good thing your lens didn't take a swim. I hope the bump hasn't hurt it either. I hope you are feeling better soon. Beautiful capture of the autumn colours
Lovely lines and fall colors! So sorry about your mishap with your lens and especially your knee. Have you had it looked at yet? Hope it isn't too serious.
Owww, owww, ow, I hope you are currently icing that knee while calling for medical intervention back in Chicago! Glad the lens is safe....I would have done the same thing and ran after the lens impulsively! Hope it heals well...:-(((
Oh My, what a terrible day you have had. The first 13 points are pretty drastic, but at least you have ended on 14 with a positive note. Every cloud has a silver lining. Hope you are up and running again soon. Take care.
Oh no Taffy what a horrible thing to happen! At least you friend was able to get you home to her house! Hope it's feeling better but sounds like you need to see someone about it straight away! Do the ice pack treatment to bring any swelling down. Take care!
Take care this sounds serious. Island life is great most of the time but like everything else it has it's drawbacks. Next time remember that lens are replaceable and not worth risking life or limb.
Oh Taffy, I'm so sorry to hear this news - I know all about knee injuries, they must be taken very seriously. Joan @joansmor has some good advice I think. Given the circumstances, I'm amazed that you managed to think about photography at all! Take care of yourself.
well, I learned last summer that (pain aside), there are advantages to not being too mobile -- a different kind of freedom caused by clearing your plate of other stuff. (So long as it's temporary)
And yet while in pain, you take a lovely image of your surroundings. Perhaps focusing on something else helped you ignore the knee pain for a moment. Glad the lens was rescued but sorry your knee was damaged.
So sorry about your knee - hope it isn't anything serious! Glad that the lens is allright - I know what it feels like when a lens disaster strikes. Lovely shot!
Take care of the knee. I hope you can see someone as soon as possible about it. I tore my ACL two years ago. If it is anything like that be aware that they may try to just let it heal and not fix it since you are older like me. Truth be told for photography you really need the stability the ACL provides to your knee. It is a long six months recovery though. On that note I hope it is not the ACL or another one of the essential ligaments in the knee.
Glad you saved your lens but so sorry about your knee! Been there and am wincing at the memory of the pain. I did the splits on skis on an icy patch at Tahoe five years ago ...followed by surgery and six months of rehab. Hope yours is minor and resolves quickly!
Oh Taffy. What a horrid very bad day.Hoping for pain free days ahead for you.How you managed to still get a positively lovely shot is amazing.Have to fav it!
LOVE this one fav.
No one ever realizes the pains we take to gt the shot sometimes. For you it was literal. Hope you knee heals quickly and your 85 lens is in good working order too.
While you've depicted a lovely place to stop for a photo, the litany trauma that occurred told of a less-than pleasant day! Your notes were gripping, even as your lens slipped away!
You have my total sympathy Taffy, sounds like a nightmarish day, but luckily you saved the lens. I am bogged down with a bad hip, really drags you down, so I hope your knee is not arthritic and that it is treatable really soon. Gorgeous autumnal image, love all the golden colours.
Oh Taffy your poor knee............I can so empathise, mine is being operated on, on the 24th November! They say rest and icepacks are good, personally I can't bear the icepacks! Glad you saved your lens, hope you get fixed soon..........great shot inall this chaos!
@pixiemac Oh Sarah, that's a lot to deal with! Good luck with your surgery and here's hoping for an easy recovery! I have an appointment on Wednesday morning right after we get back to Chicago with an orthopedic surgeon. Right now it's elevation and ice packs...and naive hope that it will just somehow get better. Thanks for the kind words.
@jackie8 Thanks for the kind thoughts, Jackie! Eek...hips are also tricky and hoping you are able to e up and around soon. Arthritis is on both sides of my family and already affects me, but hadn't affected knees or hips. Keeping fingers crossed at this point. Good luck to you!
What a day this has been (You did come out with a wonderful shot, though! - and the lens wasn't damaged - those are pluses to remember as you stay off that knee for awhile!) Really do like anything with fences. Do hope this doesn't set you back too long.
I did not know that you hurt your knee. I hope you feel better soon or at least improve to be more comfortable. It is a pain in the ____ getting older. I spent yesterday in bed with Vertigo and one swollen ankle. Today I pushed to take a walk which helped the swelling. Glad your lens is ok, Taffy. Love your Fall photo.
Congrats on being a sixws-20 finalist. This really hits home as my car is out front on jack stands after a repair gone awry tonight and Mike's car is broken down, too. We need a horse;-).
No one ever realizes the pains we take to gt the shot sometimes. For you it was literal. Hope you knee heals quickly and your 85 lens is in good working order too.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
BTw great shot.
