I decided to shift from wide angle shots to using my macro (well, truth be told, to take photos of P3 and the dogs visiting, I put on the macro and then was a bit lazy about taking it off). But regardless of why, I thought this gives such a different look than the photo I took during Friday afternoon rush hour. The city is hardly golden, but rather is rain soaked and foggy. I was struck by the color that doesn't come through in the wide angle night shots -- the buildings are really a cacophony of color, while largely square and rectangle in form. The spots of red on the street are cars stuck going through construction on this one-way street heading east toward the lake. Definitely looks best on black.
Today was such a normal day...what a joy! Two weeks ago tonight will be the start of what we now refer to as 'after the fire.' What a difference 2 weeks makes!
Super city shot. LOVE the great shapes and color. Love that you are in the after the fire. Sorry again to hear all that you are going though/have gone through. Glad that today was normal and a joy! So much to be thankful for!
The Nikkor f/2.8 105? It works nicely as a tack sharp medium telephoto. The "equivalent" Sigma is nice also. It shows nicely in shots like this. You handled all those verticals and horizontals beautifully.
Another lovely view out of your window. I like the more personal feel of this shot with your lens. Lots of lovely lines. :) So glad that things are returning to a more normal rhythm.
Super capture of part of your city Taffy, I like the lead of the road through the shot and I am fascinated by the building on the right. I really want a good look inside! The variety of buildings remind me of Sydney. Your vertical is just out slightly on the left hand side, I am having so much trouble with correcting vertical lines, Each time I move my tripod I try to make sure the camera is straight but I don't always seem to get it right. I am pleased you showed use a closer view.
This is really an awesome shot! I like the colors and shapes in the foreground but really am enjoying the proscenium wall of the stage in millennium park off in the distance.
I waved in your direction as I drove through last night! ;)
This is very pretty and I love all of the shapes, and shapes within the shapes. I am not sure what qualifies as a macro lens but I think I need one! :)
@kt8ird My lens is actually a 105mm macro, so I can use it at 105 for shots like this at a distance, as well as macros -- like the super closeups I took of P3 with the dogs earlier today. It's a really great lens! The first one I bought beyond the kit lens and one I've used a ton.
@frankhymus Yes, that's the lens (the Nikkor). I have always loved macro work so this was the first lens I bought and I've loved it. I've expanded my repertoire now but this was my starting point. It was also my first prime lens which I've come to really appreciate relative to a zoom, for the tack sharp possibilities.
@mwbc Heehee! In the city, it's not uncommon for people to have telescopes for "spotting" inside other buildings. It's a bit creepy I think! The large green building on the right is the Ogilvie train depot and Citibank building.
FAV -- what a surprising image for its color patterns in a city! I love the rhythm of the piece. So glad you are starting to feel a sense of "beyond" the fire.
Wow, this is taken with a macro lens. Amazing. I love the colors and detail that you captured so well. I am that things are a new normal for the two of you.
What a lovely colourful view you have given us - much more intimate - I laughed at the thought of people with telescopes!! Mind you they will be seeing you with your camera and I wonder what they will think. What's that film with James Stewart looking out the window? LOL!! I love the lines and detail of the shot - the macro lens has come into it's own!! Fav!
Taffy this apartment is like your reward for all you are putting up with. Great views. Wonder if you are seeing from above sites you might want to visit on a photo walk.
This really does highlight the fact that there's lots of color to the city's buildings. But square and rectangle are definitely the primary shape in the scene.
Great lines - did you try it in mono? I've just come from an excellent talk on mono with some beautiful examples. It has inspired me to try and look for more images which can be converted to mono.
Wonderful range of color indeed and seem to accentuate the bleakness of the weather when this image was made. My eyes are drawn to the street when I view. Very nice image!
That's really interesting. I'd have never thought of using my macro lens for this kind of shot. Thanks for sharing that. And your mention of 'fire' took me back to your post a couple of weeks ago. I miss a few days here and there, and I'd missed what had happened - I thought you'd just moved - ie, a planned move. So sorry to hear what a terrible time you've been through. As you wrote, the great thing is that no-one was hurt, and at least you have insurance, but what a terrible trauma. Sorry not to have been more alert about what a tough time you've had.
@jocasta Thanks so much! For this shot, using the 105, I didn't use any software except to sharpen contrasts. I sort of took it straight on as I was on the balcony for this one and afraid to look down!
@dolphin Thanks for the kind wishes, Molly. I appreciate them so much!
That's the way I remember Chicago, tall rectilinear buildings, lots of mediocre examples of modern glass and steel architecture, very masculine, you did such a great job of capturing that feeling, the height of the buildings, including the one where you are standing, and the scale of the "little people" down on the street below! I am kind of amused that you live in Chicago and you have a fear of heights...;-))
So glad things are returning to a normal for you. Love that color variety of the buildings, it really makes each one stand out so individually. Such a neat pov.
Amazing...my eye is drawn right down to the street and all that is going on there. Fantastic POV and so many shapes and lines, as well as color and design. Very very cool.
Viewing on black really does make a big difference in seeing the DOF in this photo. I love the color of the building on the right. And the canyon-like street is fantastic! Fav.
@panthora Lots of us in Chicago don't live in highrises!! My fear of height goes way back...but maybe by the time we leave here, I'll have it more under control.
I waved in your direction as I drove through last night! ;)
@dolphin Thanks for the kind wishes, Molly. I appreciate them so much!
